The main downside is speed. At 700 Mbps in our WireGuard tests, ProtonVPN is noticeably slower than NordVPN or Surfshark. For everyday browsing that barely matters. For large file transfers or 4K streaming, you will feel it occasionally.

Who it is for: Privacy-focused users, journalists, activists, or anyone who wants a no-strings free VPN with a trusted name behind it.

Mullvad does not want your email address. It does not want your name. You sign up by generating an account number, you pay with cash in the mail or with crypto if you prefer, and that is genuinely the extent of the relationship. No profile. No account tied to your identity.

The flat 5 EUR per month, no discounts, no 2-year plans, no upsells, is refreshing in an industry built on confusing pricing tiers. What you see is what you pay. RAM-only servers mean data cannot survive a reboot. The Cure53 audit from 2022 is getting a bit dated but the code is open source so security researchers have had ongoing visibility since then.

IPVanish is a USA-based VPN and that makes a lot of privacy-focused users nervous. Fairly so. The US is inside the 5-Eyes surveillance network and courts can compel companies to hand over data. IPVanish learned this the hard way back in 2016 under previous ownership.

But here is the thing. The company changed hands and rebuilt its entire infrastructure. The 2024 Leviathan Security audit confirmed the current no-logs policy is genuine. The USCS parent company has kept clean since then. And the speeds are genuinely impressive. 880 Mbps in our WireGuard tests, which beats NordVPN in raw throughput. Unlimited devices on a $2.19 per month subscription matches Surfshark for value.

Netflix works. Torrenting works. The apps are clean and actually pleasant to use. The server network covers 75 locations across 50 countries. For pure performance per dollar, IPVanish is hard to beat.

The honest caveat remains USA jurisdiction. If your threat model includes US government surveillance, this is not the right pick. But for most people who want a fast, affordable VPN for streaming and everyday privacy, IPVanish is genuinely excellent.

PureVPN has been around since 2007 and has had its share of drama. A 2017 incident where they assisted the FBI raised serious questions about their logging practices at the time. It is a fair part of the history and worth mentioning upfront.

But the company moved to British Virgin Islands jurisdiction and has been under ongoing KPMG audits since. Their current infrastructure is meaningfully different from 2017. The BVI location puts them outside the major surveillance alliances. And at $2.11 per month, it is actually cheaper than most competitors with comparable audit histories.

Speed came in at 650 Mbps, which is the lowest on this list for paid VPNs but still genuinely fast for any real-world use. The apps are clean and well-maintained. Netflix works reliably on paid plans.

Who it is for: Users who want a free tier that actually works, or who specifically want a Malaysian-jurisdiction VPN.

Private Internet Access has 35,000 servers. That number is not a typo. It is the largest server network on this list by a significant margin, and it means you rarely run into congestion issues.

The honest caveat is that PrivadoVPN is newer and has less of a track record than NordVPN or Surfshark. The audit is less well-known than Deloitte or KPMG. For most users that is fine. But if track record matters to you, the slightly higher-ranked options have been around longer.
